Floating gardens

Learn about the difficulty that farmers in Bangladesh experience trying to grow crops on land that is regularly flooded. Can floating gardens work? Make a model of a structure that offers a solution.

This Floating Gardens challenge from Practical Action is perfect to reinforce a lesson on forces (floating and sinking). It could also be used for a STEM club, transition or British Science Week activity.

Additionally, it makes a great outdoor lesson! Pupils will design, make and evaluate a model of a system to help people grow crops on flooded land and learn how an established system of a ‘floating garden’ is helping Bangladeshi farmers grow crops.

Testing if the ‘garden’ floats in a washing up bowl, bath or garden pond is great fun!
