Fishing for Change

An adventure for families which used integrated travel to see Bristol from a whole new perspective. Each event was spent learning, forging new friendships, plastic fishing and, importantly, reconnecting with our city.

Fishing for Change is a collaborative project with Severnside Community Rail Partnership, Crimestoppers, Bristol Community Ferries and SeaCycler.

Families met their guide for the day at their local train station and travelled into Bristol Temple Meads, learning about rail safety and developing their travel confidence along the way.

Once in Bristol we headed to the harbour and climbed aboard one of the instantly recognisable yellow ferry boats. Onboard, families learned about water safety and some of Bristol’s juiciest historical facts. Unsuprisingly, for a day on the water, sea shanties accompanied the fun.

Finally, it was time to get hands on by fishing litter out of the water, aboard our very own SeaCycler, and conducting land based litter picks.

Indeed, all sorts of finds were had including a chair, a working (and still flashing) electronic toy and the ubiqutous left shoe!). A hearty lunch followed before our families sorted all the waste and created some very fishy art!

We have now completed our trips for this year. We are currently seeking funding for more trips and if you would like to be the first to hear about any future trips please complete our booking form

Check out our Summer 2024 summary film for this project.

A huge thank you to our funders GWR and Community Rail Network and DfT for making the summer 2024 trips possible.

Our kids are well clued up on what we are doing to our planet, but not always given chances to help correct it and be brave. It’s free, adults learned loads too – even in a family very familiar with climate issues – accessible, social, educational and utterly affordable as a family on benefits in social housing.
